We Are Mapbox
Our power is stronger when we stand together
Why did you join the union?
I joined the Mapbox Workers Union because I want to work at an awesome company. I want to work in a place where performance reviews don't just judge how employees performed for the company, but also how the company lived up to its promise to its employees. I want to work in a place where workers and leadership can collaborate not just on how we deliver for our customers, but how we can both deliver to our customers and our employees. Company culture is made by the people in it and, by leveraging our collective IQ in MWU, we can ensure that Mapbox is produces great tech and is a great place to work.
Why did you join the union?
I joined the Mapbox Workers Union because I believe it is the best way to hold Mapbox leadership accountable to those who build Mapbox and those who depend on it.
What do you want to accomplish with Mapbox Workers Union?
I want the union to be able to hold leadership eccountable to various employee rights. This includes equal pay, guaranteed cost of living adjusted raises, guranteed high quality healthcare coverage, maintaining adequate work life balance by not leaving teams understaffed etc. Tech employees have to freqently switch jobs to find all of these and with the collective power of a union it does not have to be so.
What do you hope to change at Mapbox?
I want Mapbox to once again be the place I joined that inspired me, gave me hope, excitement and opportunities for learning and growth; a place I knew cared about people, not just profits.
Why did you join the union?
I joined the union because I believe in systemic solutions rather than individualistic ones. By forming a union, we can start to normalize the idea of challenging power collectively in the tech industry. Because our industry is playing a growing role in advancing fascism, wealth inequality and white supremacy, unions are the only way tech workers all over can stand together against the unethical use of their labor towards these ends and reckon with the impact we're having on the world.
Why did you join the union?
All workplaces can improve by engaging the voice of their employees! I believe the Mapbox Workers Union can not only help Mapbox better live up to its values, but also provide a blueprint for others in the software industry to collectively organize for change.
Why did you join the union?
Because I care for my coworkers and trust us to work hard together. Our union is about recognizing our community and taking responsibility for its health and sustainability. When I think about my coworkers, I donβt think of us as employees or individual economic agents β weβre people. We share ideals, problems, and enthusiasm. I joined because I want to be in solidarity as we make our workplace more inclusive and democratic.
Why do you think Mapbox needs a union?
I think everyone needs a union! Without workers' unions I wouldn't have weekends, minimum wage, or sick time. Through our union we can work to raise the standards for all workers at Mapbox, in the tech industry, and in the broader community.
Why did you join the union?
My coworkers are the people who build Mapbox and I care about and trust them. By banding together our union will give us a powerful voice in what Mapbox's future looks like and I believe Mapbox will be better for it.
What do you want the union to accomplish?
My intention in organizing with my colleagues is to create the stability that will allow us to meet and exceed our customer's expectations. I am passionate about supporting everyone from the independent developer creating a much-needed COVID tracker to the strategic customers who inform who we will be as a company in years to come. I want our union to institutionalize a culture of care that improves retention, makes longevity viable, and empowers our most valuable asset (the workers) to deliver for customers in the long run.
Why did you join the union?
I want to improve the working conditions and morale of my peers at Mapbox so that this company can be a place we are all proud and happy to be a part of. A huge part of fostering a positive and encouraging work environment is elevating workersβ voices and giving them more of a voice in the decision making process. I believe we all will succeed if the company functions in a more representative and democratic fashion, and a union of Mapbox workers will help get us closer to that goal.
What do you hope to change at Mapbox?
The people I work with are empathetic, thoughtful, and creative, and we recognize that we donβt operate in a vacuum - what we build has profound impacts in the world. I believe that collectively, weβll have the power to create a more equitable and supportive workplace, and ensure that our labor aligns with our ethical values.
Why did you join the union?
I've been at Mapbox for 4 years now. When I joined, I was answering customer emails all day and teaching myself how to code in the evenings. With the support and mentorship of this community, I was given the opportunity to grow into a software engineering role and create a career for myself that will support my family for the rest of my life. I am grateful every day for that opportunity and deeply committed to making sure that those oppportunities are available to others, particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ, and gender minority identifying people. I believe that our union is the best way to ensure Mapbox is a successful, thriving company with diverse workers who are able to support themselves, their families, and their communities.
What do you hope to change at Mapbox?
I want us to end the expectation that a software engineer should 'just leave' when conditions are unacceptable. By joining together as workers, we can upend the traditional power dynamic and build a democratic system for changing our workplace for the better.
Why did you join the union?
I want to help solve a lot the issues that we face every day, many of which are caused by a deeper root problem. I want to elevate the voices of my colleagues and make sure that we're not addressing concerns with surface level "solutions."
What do you want the union to accomplish?
I want to hold leadership accountable to the diversity and inclusion promises theyβve made for our board composition and hiring practices, as well as oversight into the ethical usage of our products.
Why did you join the union?
I joined MWU because I believe in collective action and my teammates; and because I want to live into Mapboxβs core value of solving root problems. The tech industry is uniquely powerful, and in a world of rising concerns, forming a union is the best tool we have to affect fundamental changes collectively. By forming MWU, we are building a stable future together and pushing back against the ways in which tech is used to strengthen systems of oppression.
What do you want the union to accomplish?
Experience has shown that no matter how good the intentions of leadership or how passionate the employees, the current incentive structure will always defer to the interests of investors over workers. I want the union to correct this imbalance, and allow Mapbox to finally practice the values it preaches publicly.
Why do you think Mapbox needs a union?
We're organizing to support one another and democratize our workplace. Mapbox already holds values that align with this: communicating with transparency, building with empathy, valuing collective knowledge rooted in diverse perspectives (to name a few). Our union provides a foundation and clear structure on which Mapbox can continue to grow through these values. I want to nurture an open dialogue with all of my colleagues around the world and be able to advocate for our best interests, together.
Why did you join the union?
I am excited for us to create a work culture that we're proud of, maintain equity in our workplace, and hold the usage of our products to the highest ethical standards. By unionizing, we are learning from the long and incredible history of the labor movement, and helping raise standards across the tech industry.
