Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we organizing?

We formed Mapbox Workers Union so we can better work together to build a lasting, accountable, inclusive Mapbox for each other and our users.

Who is organizing?

Mapbox Workers Union is composed of workers across all roles and departments at Mapbox throughout the US.  Out of respect for our members’ privacy we do not have a public list of union members.

What are our goals?

Our goals are many and we depend on the voices of our members to define them. Below a few common goals widely shared among our members. This list is incomplete and ever changing as our needs evolve.

  • Recognition from management. Then we aim to collectively bargain for improvements to our workplace. Read our vision statement to learn about our shared values. Below are a few examples of how we’d like to manifest our Vision.

  • Equal pay for equal work, this requires transparency about pay bands within the company.

  • Just cause protections. Too often we’ve seen members of our teams let go with only a passing explanation of why at best and no justification at worst. We are seeking a transparent process that is approved by our members that clearly outlines under what circumstances a worker can or can’t be fired.

  • Moral dignity in the fruits of our labor. We seek a process to ensure that that our products are not used to aide or implement practices that violate or are intended to violate basic human rights or civil liberties.

What do we gain?

As employees, we have voices that should be heard. If there are concerns, they should be addressed. If we do amazing work, it should be valued appropriately. By unionizing, we gain a democratic voice and the power to collectively bargain. Collective bargaining balances power between Mapbox leadership and those who do the work of building Mapbox in service of improving and maintaining the conditions of our work environment.

By unionizing, we gain a legitimized role in shouldering responsibility for our own needs, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace, and building a stable, supportive Mapbox that enables us to do our best work, provides opportunities for career growth, and encourages us to stay.

By unionizing, we gain more protection and representation over our rights as workers. By publicly supporting a union, you assert your protected right to organize without retaliation.

How much are union dues?

When we move to negotiate our first contract, we will also decide how to contribute union dues. Typically, you can expect it to be about 2.25 hours of pay/month. Dues are our money: we all will vote on the budget, which we decide. Dues are also not a substitute for collective action. Mapbox Workers Union is always only what we put into it.

What union are we joining?

Our group of workers across all roles at Mapbox are members of the Communications Workers of America, through the CODE-CWA tech and digital organizing campaign. Founded in 1947 as a telecom union, CWA represents 700,000 workers in private and public sector employment. CWA members work in telecommunications and information technology, the airline industry, news media, broadcast and cable television, health care, public service and education, manufacturing and other fields.
